Town Crier

Town Crier

The Town Crier is a performance where by a device, consisting of a backpack of four mounted megaphones, is worn by an individual walking in the city. The device finds any recent geotagged tweets within 90 meters of the wearer then converts the tweet’s text to speech, amplifying the ‘robotic’ voice through the megaphones.
These sonifications play with the disparity between what can often be intended as very private or relatively anonymous reflections, and the openness of physical spaces that they are associated with. ‘Shouting out’ these bits of text wrenches them, quite forcibly, back into public perception. At the same time the monotone electronic voice puts these statements on an even plane - the voice belongs to the place rather than any individual, giving at different times nonsensical, funny, or timely and touching, glimpses of the collective memory of a place.
